Dear Chuug'ers
Sean McCord from ITC, Howard Powell from Astronomy and I are putting
together a series of Linux topics at the May 24 LSP Conference. LSP
stands for Local Support Partners - which means the technical folk who
provide continuity and support throughout UVa.
We will have a whole room dedicated to just Linux and Unix discussions and
presentations. Here are the topics that we are considering:
1) Content Management System (CMS) automated tools for web management
2) General purpose Open Source tools: Security and Anti-virus
3) Survey self-paced learning and support sites, including UVA support
options
4) Revivifying old equipment with Linux
5) Linux applications, including MS Office alternatives and UVA-licensed
software, and virtualization options.
As you can see, most of these topics are geared toward the uninitiated.
Many of the LSPs will have just endured two days of Windows Vista
training, so we see this as an excellent opportunity to introduce them
to alternatives. If you are interested in being a part of the
conference, either as a presenter or simply to spend some time in the
Linux room and answer questions, please contact me.
We are encouraging *nix professionals from outside UVa to participate.
The conference will be at the Darden School and there is a *free* lunch for
participants. If you agree to help in any way, you will be registered as a
guest of the organizing committee (Me and Howard and Sean).
What other topics would be good for a general audience of techies? We have
a Summer Skills Session where a whole afternoon is devoted to techical
topics that require hands-on lab work and/or a longer introduction. These
sessions happen every 2 to 4 weeks during the summer. We are saving a
"General Introduction to *nix" and a "Samba Fast Start" and "Survey of *nix
Distros" for the summer.
I also welcome comments and suggestions at the *beta* LSP blog:
