About us:

VibeAgent Inc. is a new travel 2.0 web site that combines user reviews,
meta-search, and social networking to help people find the perfect hotel at
the perfect price.  VibeAgent.com is currently in private beta and
accessible by invitation only.  The company was founded in early 2006 and is
based in Charlottesville, Virginia.

What we¹re looking for:

We¹re seeking a bright, energetic, and dedicated team player with strong,
versatile computer science fundamentals to be a core contributor to
architecting, building, and scaling VibeAgent¹s backend.  You will need
strong skills in application and server-side development; experience and/or
interest in designing and maintaining high-volume systems is a big plus.
While the environment is fun and friendly, it¹s really fast paced: schedules
are measured in days, not weeks, and our team is obsessed with delivering
the best user experience possible.

What you will be doing:

Feature Development: Pump out features that users want to see! We keep a top
10 list of most requested features, biggest bugs, and all sorts of other
tasks that get added to our to-do lists.  If you want to have your work used
by lots of people all over the world, VibeAgent is the place to be.

Scaling and Optimizing:  Always a constant challenge.  Help us efficiently
handle our ever-growing traffic! Have creative ideas or experience on how to
build a robust, highly-tuned server infrastructure to serve millions of
users a month?  Help us architect and maintain a reliable back-end system to
support a dynamic web front-end ‹ we have a really high bar for quality and
that¹s something we spend quite a bit of time on.

Designing and Innovating:  Interested in creating systems that are cutting
edge and new? Want to think up new ways to connect people with people and
things and places?  We strive to push the envelope and sometimes we get some
crazy ideas in our headsŠ coming up with a clever way to get those ideas
into code is a lot of fun.

Exploring:  VibeAgent is not wed to any particular technology.  We¹re
totally open to exploring new ideas, new technologies, and anything else the
tech world has to offer.  Developers are encouraged to poke around and see
what¹s new and exciting.
 
The ideal candidate will have:
3-5+ years of PHP software development experience on Linux/Unix
3-5+ years MySQL experience
BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science (or equivalent experience)
Phenomenal debugging principles (and perseverance)
Excellent communication and collaboration skills
Previous experience with web server technologies and database fundamentals
Experience/strong interest in high performance, scalable systems
The ideal candidate will be a bright, logical team player with obsessive
attention to detail

Some questions:
1.            How would you go about multi-threading in PHP, and how would
you manage inter-process-communication?
2.            Wide tables vs. tall tables.  Which would you use where, and
why?
3.            MySQL replication.  What can possibly go wrong?
4.            A table has a column containing NULLs and other values.  How
would you order a query to have the NULLs returned first?
5.            Out of all the sites out there now, which do you wish the most
you¹d started?
