Dear IAU FITS Working Group members,

I would like to now call for your votes on the FITS MIME type resolution and
on the proposal to create a new Australia/New Zealand regional FITS
committee. The full text of each resolution is given below.

Please send your votes via e-mail to me personally at
William.D.Pence@nasa.gov (do not send a Reply to this email list). Please
cast your votes as soon as possible, but the voting period will be held open
until early September, if necessary, to give any members who may be away for
an extended period a reasonable chance to cast their votes.

For each resolution you may vote either:

   Yes - I agree
   No - I disagree
Abstain - I wish to express no preference

Note that any "No" votes against the MIME type resolution will cause an
automatic suspension of the voting process for up to 6 months, during which
time attempts will be made to reach a compromise that will eliminate the
"No" vote.

Note too that any votes to "Abstain" on either of the resolutions can also
have negative consequences: it reduces the number of "No" votes needed to
defeat the resolution, and if 6 or more members vote to "Abstain" (or don't
vote at all) then the resolution will also be defeated.

The 2 resolutions that are being voted on are:

Resolution 1 on the FITS MIME type proposal:
--------------------------------------------

This resolution endorses the MIME type proposal and recommends that it be
submitted to the appropriate Internet regulating authorities for adoption as
an Internet standard:

"We endorse the "MIME Sub-type Registrations for FITS" document by
Allen and Wells (draft dated 17 May 2004) and recommend that it be
submitted to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) as an Internet
Draft in the expectation that the IETF review process will approve it
as an Informational RFC and register the FITS MIME types with the
   Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA)."

Resolution 2 on the Australia/New Zealand Regional FITS committee:
------------------------------------------------------------------

"We support the creation of a new Australia/New Zealand Regional
FITS committee that will have duties and responsibilities on par
with the existing North American, European, and Japanese Regional
    FITS committees."
