Bonjour Francois,

Since the subject re-arises (and on the second anniversary of the last
draft - my how time flies!), I've appended a paper I started work on
concerning the representation of colour in FITS. Although obviously
incomplete, I believe it represents a reasonable start on the topic.

Colour representation in FITS should be capable of colorimetry if it's
to be of serious use. There is probably a lot more to this than you
might imagine - if you've never heard of Grassmans's laws or the
CIE 1931 colour-matching functions then browse through wikipedia, it
now has excellent articles on many topics in colour theory.

The most interesting part of the paper is hidden in the PostScript
program (extractable) that produces the CIE chromaticity horseshoe
from first principles. The completed paper would include a section on
how to render an emission line spectrum in a calibrated colour space.

Regards, Mark
