So here are my few comments on the FITS Registry Proposal:
 
 1) It is important that convention are checked at a minimum.
     At least that they conform to the basic standard.  So a fully
     open registry is a little too much.

 2) Some kind of indication of usage would be good e.g. historic,
     current, ...

 3) Some of the 'approval process' is not relevant for
     conventions already in use.  For new ones it may be
     a little heavy.  One could imaging rather local ones
     which are nice to know about and widely used ones
     going through the full thing.
