Results of Regional FITS Committee Votes on the HEALPix Convention
------------------------------------------------------------------

I am pleased to announce that all 4 regional FITS committees have endorsed
the proposed HEALPix WCS convention with no "No" votes and only a couple
members voting to "Abstain" or not voting at all. The actual voting results
are shown below:

This HEALPix proposal is available for review at
http://www.atnf.csiro.au/~mcalabre.  I would now like to call for any
further discussion or comment on this HEALPix proposal before calling for a
IAU-FWG vote on the following resolution:

FITS WCS Paper II ("Representations of celestial coordinates in FITS"
Calabretta, M. R., and Greisen, E. W., Astronomy & Astrophysics, 395,
1077-1122, 2002) was written with the intention that new spherical
projection types might be added in the future.   The conventions for one
such spherical projection, namely, for the HEALPix projection, are given in
Section 6 of the paper "Mapping on the HEALPix grid" by Mark Calabretta and
Boud Roukema.  The IAU FITS Working Group hereby approves this HEALPix
convention as an extension of the FITS World Coordinate System (WCS) standard.
