[iaufwg] FITS Registry Proposal

One common thread in most of the comments about the registry proposal is
that the requirements seem too strict for dealing with existing FITS
conventions. I agree, and therefore have produced a 2nd version of the
proposal at

http://fits.gsfc.nasa.gov/fits_registry_v2.html

(The previous version is still available at
http://fits.gsfc.nasa.gov/fits_registry.html for comparison)

This registry now specifically only applies to Existing FITS conventions. A
different (but hopefully similar) process would need to be defined if we
want to set up a review process for developing new conventions. I think it
is more important, and more productive, to start getting the existing
conventions documented, so I would prefer to start with them, and postpone
thinking about how to handle new conventions to a later time.

This proposal is deliberately vague about what the actual repository looks
like. I still think we should start with a simple web site that provides
links to the information about each convention, but this doesn't preclude
also doing something more elaborate.

So please review this new proposal to see if you think this is something
that we can start implementing soon.

regards,
Bill
