Dear IAU-FWG members,

In order to settle this matter fairly, I am calling for a procedural
vote of the IAU FWG members on the editorial issue that has been raised
by Mark Calabretta. A vote is necessary because it is not possible to
accurately judge the sentiment of the FITS working group as a whole from
the current discussions, which have been dominated by only a few members.

Please vote "yes" if you prefer that the first sentence of the new
paragraph at the beginning of section 8.1 should include the
parenthetical clause, as shown here:

Rather than store world coordinates separately for each datum,
(e.g. as is done for the random parameters using PTYPEn in random
groups data) the regular lattice structure of a FITS image offers
the possibility of defining rules for computing world coordinates
   at each point.

Mark's stated reason for wanting to include this clause is that it is
useful to explain one thing by pointing out the distinction with another.

On the other hand, please vote "no" if you prefer the first sentence
without the parenthetical clause as shown here:

Rather than store world coordinates separately for each datum,
the regular lattice structure of a FITS image offers the
possibility of defining rules for computing world coordinates
   at each point.

I prefer this because I think adding the clause would confuse most
readers of document who have no experience with random groups or the
PTYPEn random parameters.

This is a simple matter, so I hope you can promptly send your vote to me
privately by email so that we can finish the process of approving the
new FITS Standard. I will send out daily reminders to those that have
not voted.

To repeat, please vote either:

* Yes, include the parenthetical clause

  or

* No, do not include the parenthetical clause

In principle, you may also vote "no option", but I urge you to vote
either "Yes" or "No" even if you do not have a strong option, so that we
end up with an unambiguous voting result.

regards,
Bill
